The HIV Pathogenesis Programme (HPP) is a multidisciplinary HIV pathogenesis research programme based at
the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Nelson Mandela School of Medicine in Durban. The HPP has been involved in
studies of HIV-1 immunopathogenesis for over 15 years.
The HPP has a Research Nurse position available. The incumbent will be required to be highly motivated,
meticulous and hard-working and be able to work independently. The incumbent will report to the Clinic
Operations Manager.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
4 year Diploma or Degree in General Nursing
4 year’s work experience as a professional nurse
2 year’s experience drawing bloods from adults and children
Fluency in English and isiZulu
ADVANTAGE
Certificate in HIV/AIDS management and/or research experience
2 year’s experience in HIV/AIDS teaching/training/counselling
Good computer literacy
RESPONSIBILITIES
Recruitment and follow up of study participants
Perform HIV rapid testing and counselling
Draw blood from adults and children
Take patient history, assess and examine adults and children
Label blood samples and send to Laboratory
Explain research study consent forms to participants
Counsel and give health education
Ordering of consumables for the study
Check availability of all previous time points results for each study participants
Record screening and enrolment data onto logs for each study
Correct queries highlighted in the QC report
Handling of petty cash and issuing of patient incentives
Administrative duties related to record keeping and completion of case report forms
Maintaining patient confidentiality
Liaising with the Data Management team to generate statistics reports
Must be able to work as part of a study team

Terms of appointment and Selection Process
The post will commence on 1 August 2019 and will be offered on a one-year, fixed term contract. The terms and
conditions governing this appointment will be in compliance with those of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. The
position is potentially renewable, depending on availability of funds.
